Recent news reports show why choosing your own doctor under workers compensation is a critical decision.

The Los Angeles Times reports on fifteen doctors, pharmacists, and other medical professionals who have been charged in a $25 million dollar workers compensation scheme. It is alleged that a claims management firm hired pharmacists to produce a pain-relief cream and gave kickbacks so that it would be prescribed.

This news comes on the heels of a Michigan doctor who was charged with giving chemotherapy drugs to patients who did not require it. He allegedly bilked the government out of millions in false Medicare claims.

These frightening stories remind us why it is important to find a doctor who you trust. Selecting your own doctor is perhaps the most important benefit under Michigan workers compensation.

Medical Treatment

Individuals who are hurt on-the-job are entitled to receive medical care under workers compensation. This benefit is unlimited provided the treatment is both reasonable and necessary.

Medical care includes hospital visits, surgery, appointments with doctors, physical therapy, prescription medications, dental care, prosthetics, eyeglasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, and other devices or appliances necessary to relieve the effects of a work injury.

Selecting your own doctor

Insurance companies want to control the selection of doctor. This provides an edge when trying to manipulate work restrictions. Many of these providers receive a large portion of their business from insurance companies and a conflict of interest could arise.

You can select your own doctor after 28 days from the start of medical care. All you need to do is tell the insurance company of your intention to switch doctors. Make sure you provide the name and address to the insurance company.

Our experience shows that you get better care when you select your own doctor.  You also need someone on your side if the insurance company ever disputes benefits.
