Governor Snyder comes out supporting the expansion of Medicaid and how this could positively affect workers compensation in Michigan.
The Detroit Free Press reports on Governor Snyder’s move to support the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. We applaud this gutsy decision and think it will be a great benefit to our state.
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) has been a source of great controversy and debate. However, there can be no dispute that it will help the poorest in our state gain access to health care.
Funding and implementation must still pass the Legislature. We hope the current Republican majority will have the foresight and wisdom to follow the governor’s lead.
Medicaid For Work Injuries
Medicaid is an insurance program that provides medical assistance to individuals with very low income and limited assets. It is funded by the state and eligibility can be difficult.
According to the Free Press, coverage would be extended to people within 133% of the federal poverty level: $11,490 for a single person without children and $23,550 for a family of four.
This would have the effect of helping nearly a half million low-income Michiganders who are currently uninsured. The federal government will also help pick up the tab.
Michigan Workers Compensation
Many people cannot afford treatment after their workers compensation claims are denied. This makes proving a case more difficult because there is a lack of medical evidence. Lots of these people just give up.
The expansion of health care will allow these individuals to obtain medical proof that their condition is work-related. This will force insurance companies to pay valid claims and open the door for reimbursement to the government.
It will also help people get needed treatment even when workers compensation has denied their claim. This will result in faster recovery times and get people back to work. This is good for both employers and employees.
