Miscellaneous Odds & Ends

News and commentary about workers compensation issues in Michigan.

Access to the Detroit hearing site from the Fisher Building tunnel is now restricted to State of Michigan employees. This change was effective starting on March 25, 2013 at 5:00 pm. We are unhappy with this change as it is inconvenient for our attorneys and requires injured clients to walk in traffic. This is the same Cadillac building that was in jeopardy of a federal lawsuit for not being handicap accessible.

Rumor has it that the Pontiac hearing site will be moving down the road. No official announcement has been made but renovations are supposedly underway in the Ottawa Towers building. Look for the move sometime in May 2013. This will mean adjournments on some previously scheduled cases.

The Smart Act was signed by President Obama in January 2013. New procedures for obtaining conditional payment information should take effect within a couple months. This will allow stakeholders to get a “final demand” before settlement and bring more certainty to the process. Future blog posts will highlight our impressions of the new system.

New rule allowing for electronic payment of benefits has been in effect for a few weeks. We are curious to hear if this is working for people. Please e-mail us with your experiences and comments.

Magistrate disposition statistics have been released through February 2013. Four open awards, six closed awards, and ten denials. It is good to see magistrates are still giving awards even with the draconian changes to the law.
