Miscellaneous odds & ends – update for June 2013

News and commentary regarding workers comp issues in Michigan.

Reviews are in for the new Pontiac hearing site and they are not good. The space is cramped and attorney-client rooms have been reduced in number. Parking is a disaster because the attached structure is closed. Rumor has it that a dispute exists between the emergency financial manager and building owner. The crumbling parking lot across the street can be used temporarily. Not exactly safe and secure for the attorneys and clients who must use the building.

The Agency has released statistics showing 2508 new cases have been filed through the month of April. This is on par with 2012 when 2507 cases were opened during the same time period. Total cases pending in the state are 12,143.

Magistrate disposition statistics have been released through April 30, 2013. It shows 6 open awards, 9 closed awards, and 17 denials.

The Notice of Dispute Report for last year has been released. The statewide average is 8.9%. The Agency has suggested insurance companies with higher percentages examine their claims procedures and not file unnecessary disputes. Some insurance companies in the report are disputing claims at a rate over four times the average.

Travel reimbursement rate remains at .565 cents per mile after January 1, 2013.
