Raising awareness about heart disease and how individuals who suffer a heart attack can seek workers’ compensation benefits in Michigan.

The White House has designated February as American Heart Month. This annual event brings awareness to our nation’s #1 killer. 1 in 4 deaths in the United States are caused by heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), small changes in lifestyle can make a big difference in heart health. Suggestions include regular doctor visits, adding exercise to daily routine, eating healthier, and quitting smoking.

We encourage all of our blog readers to take steps to improve their heart health. If a heart attack does occur, here is what employees should know about workers’ compensation.

Available workers’ comp benefits

Michigan workers’ compensation pays all reasonable and necessary medical care. This includes ambulance runs, hospital visits, follow-up treatment, and prescription medications. Family members can even be paid up to 56 hours per week to help with activities of daily living.

A person is generally entitled to 80% of their after-tax average weekly wage if a heart attack stops them from working. Weekly payments continue for the entire period of disability.

Proving a disputed case

A person needs to prove a heart attack was caused or significantly accelerated by their employment. This can sometimes be inferred by the kinds of work activities during or immediately preceding the cardiovascular event.

Michigan law also requires a weighing of work and non-work factors. This can be a very difficult burden if an employee already has significant risk factors.

Michigan Workers Comp Lawyers never charges a fee to evaluate a potential case. Our law firm has represented injured and disabled workers exclusively for more than 35 years. Call (855) 221-2667 for a free consultation today.
