MIOSHA releases fatality data for first six months of 2014 and how many of these tragedies could have been avoided.

Data from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) shows thirteen workplace fatalities so far in 2014. The most frequent causes of death were falls, crush injuries, and caught between. The full table can be found here.

We believe that employees should always come before company profits. This means training and safety must come first. Here are some resources for employers and employees to make safer workplaces.

Fall Prevention

OSHA has outlined three steps to reduce the number of falls in the workplace. Read more about OSHA’s Fall Prevention Campaign.

1) Plan ahead to get the job done safely,

2) Provide the right equipment, and

3) Train everyone to use the equipment safely.

Crush Injuries

The University of Maryland Medical Center provides guidance on first aid treatment for crush injuries. Here are some steps that are suggested.

1) Stop bleeding by applying direct pressure.

2) Cover the area with a wet cloth or bandage, then raise the area above the level of the heart, if possible.

3) If there is suspicion of a head, neck or spinal injury, immobilize those areas if possible and then limit movement to only the crushed area.

4) Call your local emergency number (such as 911) or local hospital for further advice.

MIOSHA Complaint Process

Employees have the right to file a complaint with MIOSHA regarding workplace safety and health hazards. This process allows a person to request withholding of their name from the employer. Information about the MIOSHA complaint process can be found here.
