Warning about medical providers who do not have your best interests at heart and try to get rich at your expense.

The Detroit Free Press has reported that Dr. Oscar Linares has been sentenced to 57 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts. He will also forfeit personal items, including luxury cars, boats, and jewelry.

Linares was accused of running a multimillion-dollar pill mill operation that fed drug addicts and the black market from the Monroe Pain Center. Over 1.2 million illegal dosages of pain pills were prescribed.

We have blogged about bad doctors in the past. A neurosurgeon pled guilty last year to misleading patients, performing spinal fusions without implanting intended medical devices, and billing for services not performed.

Opioids have also been a hot topic in workers’ compensation. It can be hard to manage pain symptoms and work activities. Some doctors have been accused of over prescribing pain pills leading to addiction and illicit drug use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Michigan Workers’ Compensation Agency (WCA) have introduced guidelines to combat this problem.

Selecting a good doctor

Michigan law permits individuals hurt-on-the job to choose their own doctor after 28 days. Many of our clients ask for recommendations about medical providers and treatment. We tell them to find a doctor who has their best interest at heart and will support their claim. Getting a referral to a specialist from a trusted family physician is a good strategy.

Payment of all reasonable and necessary medical treatment is covered under workers’ compensation. This includes a situation where a person become addicted to pain medication. It is also permitted to get a second opinion if something seems wrong.

Michigan Workers Comp Lawyers never charges a fee to evaluate a potential case. Our law firm has represented injured and disabled workers exclusively for more than 35 years. Call (855) 221-2667 for a free consultation today.
