Michigan workers compensation lawyers offer tips and advice on how to stay safe while working outside in the fall.

The leaves are changing colors and the temperature is getting colder. Fall is here and we want you to be safe while working outdoors.

Many work injuries can be avoided with proper equipment and some common sense. Your health and safety should always be a priority.

Here are some tips and advice on how to stay safe during the fall months.

Dress for success
If you are operating equipment such as a lawn mower or leaf blower, you could damage your hearing. Find a good set of ear protection and use it every time you work. You should also wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris. Proper clothing will keep your body warm and protected.

Sun safety
Sunburns are not just a problem in the summer. Always use sunscreen and have regular appointments with a dermatologist. You can also suffer an injury to your eyes. Buy a pair of quality sunglasses and use them often.

Water is still important
You can become dehydrated even in the colder weather. Dehydration is a serious medical condition. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Seek immediate medical care if you feel ill. Don’t take a chance with your life.

Protect your back
Lifting and twisting can cause a serious back injury. You may end up with a herniated disc or other spinal injury. Get help from co-workers when lifting heavy items and use a wheelbarrow when appropriate. Also, watch out for shoulder injuries related to pushing and pulling motions.

Educate yourself
Make sure you know how to operate tools and equipment provided by your employer. Ask for training on the proper use of a ladder. Find out if you need special gloves or boots if you are working with chemicals and sprays. Get training in first aid and know how to deal with allergic reactions to insect bites.

What to do if you suffer an injury at work

Always report an injury when it happens at work and seek appropriate medical care. This will ensure that your legal rights are protected. You will be entitled to medical treatment and lost wages if you cannot work.
