How much did the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund pay out in 2017?

We have blogged about the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund (FRPCF) on several occasions. It was created by the Michigan Legislature in 2014 to help firefighters diagnosed with presumed occupational cancer.

Unfortunately, a permanent funding mechanism was not included when the law passed. A one-time cash infusion of $1,000,000 was approved in 2016 and additional funding is coming from taxation of medical marijuana.

It does not seem like the FRPCF gets much attention and we are hoping this changes. Legislation was recently introduced to include breast cancer.

Statistics released by the WCA show the FRPCF is currently paying benefits on 14 claims. 10 new applications were received in 2017 and 6 were approved.

For the period of January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017, the FRPCF paid $51,676.63 in indemnity benefits and $133,369.34 in medical. Total expenditures including administration and staff costs were $309,698.58.

The FRPCF does not anticipate a funding shortfall with a current fund base of $2,300,651.00 on December 31, 2017, and the FY18 proposed appropriation.
