Travel reimbursement rates under workers compensation in Michigan.

Some of our clients must travel far distances for their medical treatment. Reimbursement for lodging, meals, and mileage should be provided under workers compensation.

Here are the current rates effective January 1, 2014.

Mileage (per mile): $0.56
Lodging (per day): $75.00 plus taxes
Breakfast: $7.25, $8.75*
Lunch: $7.25, $8.75*
Dinner: $16.50, $21.00*

*Select cities (All of Wayne County, All of Oakland County, Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Detroit, Holland, Mackinac Island, Pontiac, South Haven)

Independent medical examination (IME)

You may be requested to attend an IME. This is when the insurance company has you examined by a doctor of its choosing. Not attending the IME could result in a forfeiture of workers compensation benefits. Mileage reimbursement should be provided to you before this medical examination occurs.

Even if you have moved out of state, you may still be cited for an examination in Michigan. You should be paid for travel expenses to and from this appointment. Insurance companies should provide reimbursement for airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals. The only exception would be if the IME is scheduled near your trial date.

Free help with your claim

We routinely see insurance companies take advantage of injured workers. Mileage is not paid and the individual has no way of attending the IME. This results in an unfair termination of workers compensation benefits.

You should contact an experienced workers compensation attorney if mileage is not being paid in your claim. Solving minor issues can help you avoid major problems in the future.
