Tips to get the most out of mileage reimbursement and vehicle modification under workers’ compensation in Michigan.

Part 3 of making the best of your medical care focuses on mileage reimbursement and vehicle modification. Individuals on workers’ compensation get paid for every mile to and from doctor appointments. The current mileage rate is $0.535. Here are some tips to get the most out of your mileage reimbursement.

Tip 1: Keep track of all miles

We tell our clients to keep track of all medical appointments. Write down dates and locations. Use Google Maps to calculate distance from home. Total miles multiplied by .535 should provide an estimate of what is owed. Provide this information to the insurance company every 30 days.

Tip 2: Ask for additional travel expenses

Individuals who must travel a far distance from home can seek additional expenses for meals and lodging. Current meal rates for select cities include $10.25 for breakfast, $10.25 for lunch, and $24.25 for dinner. Reimbursement for lodging is $75.00 plus taxes each night.

Tip 3: Request vehicle modifications

Some of our clients require a wheel chair accessible van. Michigan law requires payment for vehicle modifications but not the van itself. This sometimes creates an absurd situation where a person can get modifications but not afford the van. It is best to speak with an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer if this situation arises.
