Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. and trying to make a difference for injured workers.

Our nation celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday of each January. This national holiday has become a day of service for many in the community. We encourage all of our blog readers to take some time and think about challenges facing people hurt on-the-job.

Our law firm is dedicated to helping those individuals who have suffered from an accident at work. We believe access to medical care and having a good paying job are civil rights issues. In fact, King was assassinated the evening before he was to speak at a protest in support of striking workers.

How can you make a difference? Here are 3 suggestions that you can adopt in your own workplace.

1. Promote health & wellness

Employee health and wellness are extremely important. Studies have shown that creating a wellness program can actually reduce the number and duration of workers compensation claims. Healthier people tend to get back to work sooner. Motivate co-workers to make positive changes in their lifestyle. Reward employees for taking steps to improve their health.

2. Do more than is legally required

Michigan employers have significant responsibilities under workers compensation. This includes paying for medical care and lost wages. But employers could be doing even more! We encourage you to be an advocate for your injured employee. Help with insurance company red tape and keep the lines of communication open. This will reduce the chances of a lawsuit and your company will be rewarded with better employee morale.

3. Provide light duty work if appropriate

Many of our clients simply want to get back to work. Nobody gets rich from workers compensation and the limited benefits put a financial squeeze on their family. Light duty work gives your employee a chance to be productive despite his or her restrictions. Do not offer a demeaning job that serves no purpose other than harassment.
