Michigan sees largest drop in opioid prescriptions in new 26 state survey.

Opioid addiction has become a major problem nationwide. People are dying and this is a real crisis. We have seen some of our own clients struggle with this issue. Our job as workers’ compensation lawyers is to advocate for employee health and safety.

A new study published by the Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) shows Michigan had the largest decrease in opioid prescriptions for workers’ compensation claims. Researchers examined trends and patterns across 26 states representing over two-thirds of total workers’ compensation benefits paid across the United States.

Michigan saw a 37% drop in opioid prescriptions between 2009 and 2015. State regulators attribute this decrease to new administrative rules that were approved in 2014. Reimbursement for opioid pain medication is no longer authorized beyond 90 days unless detailed physician reporting requirements and other processes are met.

Claim costs where an opioid has been prescribed have also been shown to be much higher in workers’ compensation. This is a powerful incentive for insurance companies to pay for addiction programs and alternative treatments.

Michigan has also created a criminal unit specifically designed to combat opioid crimes. This will deter criminals and serve as a warning to doctors who overprescribe.

It is encouraging to see the opioid crisis being attacked head on. We hope anyone who is suffering from addiction gets help. Workers’ compensation will pay all medical expenses associated with recovery and alternative treatments.
