Michigan workers comp lawyer explains how a new rule would allow for the electronic transfer of wage loss benefits.

A public hearing will be held on September 27, 2012 regarding a rule change that would allow weekly wage loss benefits to be made by electronic transfer. Payments could also be made using a debit card if the disabled worker does not have access to a bank account.

The hearing will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the State Secondary Complex, 7150 Harris Drive, Dimondale, Michigan. Interested parties should go to the Workers Compensation Agency, First Floor, B-Wing.

Written comments may also be submitted until 5:00 p.m. on September 27, 2012, at the following address: Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Workers’ Compensation Agency, Attention: Jack A. Nolish, PO Box 30016, Lansing, MI 48909.

Advantage for employers and employees

This rule change has the potential to save employers money by removing the cost of mailing paper checks. It will also speed the payment of wage loss benefits to disabled workers.

We would suggest a provision that allows a disabled worker to opt out and request a paper check. This would ensure protection for those individuals who cannot receive electronic funds or who would be uncomfortable using a debit card.
