Dangers of road construction and why motorists need to show patience.
Construction of a roundabout at the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake intersection is ramping up. The Road Commission for Oakland County has announced closure of 14 Mile Road west of Orchard Lake Road starting on April 6 and continuing through July 4. Motorists should expect additional closures and delays.
This is big news for the lawyers in our Farmington Hills main office. It will create traffic problems in the already busy Northwestern Highway corridor.
Special attention also needs to be paid because of the amount of traffic and the serious risk that road construction workers face. Motorists need to show patience during this project. Slowing down and keeping your eyes on the road can prevent injury and death.
When a car accident occurs
Michigan law has stiff criminal penalties of up to 1 year in jail for injuring and up to 15 years in prison for killing a highway construction or maintenance worker. Additional penalties include tickets and fines.
The victim’s family may also have a claim against the at-fault driver. While workers comp benefits are paid by the employer, additional damages are available through a third-party lawsuit. These include pain and suffering.
Road construction is an extremely dangerous job. The potential for injury or death from a speeding car is a serious concern. Please remember that while your time is precious, nothing can replace a human life.
