Michigan work comp lawyer provides tips and advice on how to stay safe while working outside in the winter.

Winter has arrived and it’s snowing outside. The temperature is in the 20s and it feels even colder with the wind chill. It’s not a great time to be working outside.

While you may have no choice about working outside in the winter, your health and safety should always be a priority. Many cold weather injuries can be avoided with proper equipment and some common sense.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe during the winter months. Also some advice on your work comp benefits.

Make sure you can work in the cold
It’s a good idea to have regular checkups with your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to work outside. Too many people die every year from cardiac arrest while shoveling snow. Talk to your doctor about the risks and how you can protect yourself.

Dress for success
The importance of wearing proper clothing during the winter months cannot be overstated. Try to dress in layers and keep dry. Every winter worker should invest in a warm coat, gloves, boots, ear protection, and hat. Some individuals who are exposed to cold temperatures develop hypothermia or frostbite. These can be serious medical conditions that should not just be ignored. Get out of the cold and seek appropriate medical care when necessary.

Drink plenty of fluids
You can still become dehydrated even in the winter months. Make sure that you drink enough water or other appropriate fluids. Dehydration can be a serious medical emergency. Do not take a chance with your life and seek appropriate medical care if you feel ill.

Watch your back
Lifting and twisting can cause a serious back injury. You may develop a herniated disc or other spinal injury. Do not underestimate the weight of snow. Be careful shoveling and use proper lifting techniques. Ask for help from a co-worker when necessary.

Use common sense
Know how to operate tools and equipment provided by your employer. Get training in first aid and learn how to deal with medical emergencies. Don’t cut corners with your safety or push yourself to the point of injury.

What to do if you have an injury at work in Michigan

Always report an injury to your employer when it happens and seek appropriate medical care. This will ensure that your legal rights under work comp are protected.

You are entitled to medical treatment and lost wages if you cannot work. It does not matter how you were hurt or even if it was your fault.
