The amount of monthly benefits paid under Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) depends upon how much you have worked and earned in the past. The average benefit for someone who was disabled in 2022 was $2,250.*

Your amount could be lower or much higher, depending upon how much you have paid into the system. There is a five-month waiting period before disability benefits will start, but you can go back one year from when you filed.
You should always try to qualify for SSDI because it will pay greater benefits over your lifetime. You are usually insured for SSDI benefits for five years after you stop working. You will have to show that you became disabled and unable to work before the expiration of your date last insured.

SSI is an income supplement funded by general tax revenues and not Social Security taxes. It is only designed to provide assistance with the most basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. There is no waiting period for disability benefits but you can only go back to the date you filed.
