Watch out for unsolicited promises to send you workers’ compensation money in exchange for a smaller payment. Never send anyone gift cards, checks, or money orders. This is a scam designed to steal your money and identity.
Workers’ compensation is only available to people hurt on-the-job. Payment of benefits will be coordinated through your employer or its insurance company. This money is intended to compensate you for lost time away from work. Medical bills will be paid directly by the insurance company.
Cash settlements must be approved by a magistrate through a redemption hearing. A court order will show the total settlement amount and where checks are to be mailed. You will never be offered a settlement unless you have an existing claim.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is a scam. There is no “free money" under workers' compenation. Be careful if someone identifies themselves from the Workers' Compensation Appeal Board as this entity does not exist in Michigan.
