New study shows non-drug therapies helpful after knee replacement surgery and how to get them covered under Michigan workers’ compensation insurance.

The Washington Post has an interesting article about acupuncture and other alternative therapies being used to control pain after knee replacement surgery. Results from the study indicate acupuncture was most valuable at reducing or delaying the use of opioids.

While researchers noted only modest findings, it is enough to warrant additional study. Non-drug therapies are very important because of the opioid crisis that has gripped our nation.

We found this article fascinating because knee replacement surgery is a common procedure that our clients undergo. Unfortunately, many people are denied basic medical care and end up popping pills.

Problems occur when the insurance company sends a person to an independent medical examination (IME). These doctors are handpicked by the insurance company and make careers out of testifying against injured workers. Stopping medical benefits for no good reason just prolongs suffering and disability. Insurance companies would be smarter approving alternative therapies instead of trying to cut-off benefits.

Michigan law allows a person to choose his or her own doctor after 28 days. All reasonable and necessary medical treatment must be paid under workers’ compensation.

We tell our clients to find the best doctor available and explore all treatment options. If alternative therapies get denied, call an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer who can file a claim for additional benefits.
