Our annual safety reminders for people working outside in the colder fall weather.

September 22, 2018 is the first day of fall. Average temperatures are still moderate, but changes are just around the corner. It is not uncommon to see 40s and 30s in October.

We want employees to be safe while working outside in the colder months. Here are three questions to ask before heading out to work.

Q1. Are you dressed for the weather?

Time to open the closet and put away your t-shirts and shorts. It is critical to dress for the weather. Layering clothing can provide better insulation for the cooler temperatures. Items can also be removed if it gets too hot. Do not forget safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, boots, and other gear.

Q2. Do you have safety training?

Many workplace accidents can be avoided by following safety rules and training. Planning can go a long way to preventing accidents from happening in the first place. Educate yourself on company safety rules and protocols. It is also a good idea to know CPR and basic first aid.

Q3. Do you know about workers’ comp?

Nobody plans on getting hurt on-the-job but knowing your legal rights is critical. Workers’ comp pays medical bills and lost wages. Make sure to report all injuries and follow doctor instructions. Watch out for bad employers who tell you to lie about how you got hurt. Promises to pay wages under the table are rarely kept.
